Samudaripen, 2 August

Today, 2 August 2024, marks the 80th anniversary of the SAMUDARIPEN: the genocide of Roma people in Europe.

Ma bister! Do not forget! 1,500,000 victims!

‘The frequently repeated figure of 500,000 Roma deaths during the Porrajmos has become a convention,’ as Ian Hancock, professor emeritus at the University of Texas, states. We therefore cannot accept this figure as an established fact, since the documentation has not been properly analysed and there is no policy promoting research into the Samudaripen. According to Professor Hancock himself, the number of victims is probably twice or three times as high; in other words, we would probably be talking about 1,500,000 Roma people murdered during the Samudaripen. (Romea.cz)

It is estimated that around half of the Romani population living in territories occupied by the Third Reich died as a result of Nazi persecution and terror. In some areas, this proportion reached 80%.

Why is learning about historical violence important today?

Education plays a fundamental role in understanding and confronting violent pasts, while developing the knowledge and values needed to prevent future atrocity crimes. (UNESCO)

What does the RROMANIPE´S Association in Barcelona do to teach about the SAMUDARIPEN?

For 10 years, the association’s president, Ricardo Valenti Gutierrez, has been delivering training on the Samudaripen in more than 100 primary and secondary schools in Catalonia, in intermediate and higher-level vocational programmes, universities, civic centres, libraries and bookshops.

The short training module on the persecution, resistance and recognition of Roma people, specifically the SAMUDARIPEN (the mass murder of Roma at Auschwitz), is now available through the Barcelona Anti-Rumours Network’s catalogue of intercultural activities:
